A key aspect was the "Operation Alert" exercise, a nationwide drill simulating an attack, and the "Duck and Cover" campaign aimed at educating the public on safety measures. And that same year, a mascot was added, the aptly named Mr. Civil Defense. He was featured on signs, posters, training materials, and comic books to help prepare the population for the worst with his catchphrase, "alert today, alive tomorrow!"
